Rail traffic hit by train glitch
Guwahati Trivandrum express was halted due to a small mechanical defect
Chennai: Railway traffic was affected for more than an hour along the Arakkonam-Katpadi line on Sunday after the Guwahati-Trivandrum express was halted on the tracks near Sitheri in Arakkonam, owing to what the railway officials called a small mechanical defect. The railway officials said that the express train, which started from the Chennai Central station on Sunday morning, was en route to its next halt at Arakkonam when the passengers and guards noticed an odd sound from under one of the AC coaches in the train around 9 am.
“It was found that one of the parts fitted to the AC compartment had worked itself loose and was dragging along the railway tracks causing the noise,” a senior railway official said.
The train was brought to a halt and the passengers were asked to disembark. They were shifted to another train en route Trivandrum, the official said. Meanwhile, the fault was rectified and traffic resumed after about an hour. The officials brushed aside reports of injuries to any of the passengers.
Due to the sudden halting of the express train near Arakkonam, rail traffic along the Arakkonam-Katpadi line was affected. The Chennai-Bangalore Brindavan express and Arakkonam-Katpadi passenger trains had a delayed start due to the incident, railway officials said.
