Hundreds of undertrials walk out free following lok adalat
State legal services authority organised the prison adalats in the jails
Chennai: Several hundred prisoners, languishing in various jails across the state for allegedly committing petty offences, benefited from the statewide prison adalat conducted on Sunday in the wake of the recent SC order to release all undertrial prisoners who spent half of the maximum sentence prescribed for their offences.
The state legal services authority organised the prison adalats in the jails. In Chennai, a 50-member team led by principal sessions court judge N. Authinathan, Tiruvallur district judge Jaffarulla Khan and Kancheepuram district judge Raja Manickam, and chief metropolitan magistrate, Egmore, Murugan, visited Puzhal and participated in the adalat.
They were accompanied by DIG, prisons, Mauriya, and DIG (Puzhal prison) Rajendran, superintendent of women’s prison Alli Rani, and special public prosecutor, Puzhal prison, Durai Anandan, interacted with the prisoners hailing from Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts. The judicial officials referred cases of nearly 900 prisoners facing trial in the magistrate courts for committing petty offences. Following the scrutiny, the judges and magistrates released nearly 831 prisoners from Chennai (257), Tiruvallur (296) and Kancheepuram (134) districts and 27 women prisoners detained at the women’s prison in Puzhal have also benefited from the adalat.
