Chennai: In what could be another jewel in the crown of Sachin Tendulkar, the Indian cricket board is mulling over naming a series after the master blaster.
BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said it would be finalised during the forthcoming working committee meeting.
“It’s prestigious. While honouring a legend like Sachin, we have to make sure that we choose a marquee series. We don’t want to institute a series in Sachin’s name just for the sake of doing it,” Patel said.
Till date, only two Test series featuring India are played with the trophy being named after an ex-Indian cricketer. The first of its kind was the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, instituted in 1996-97, and is played between India and Australia as a tribute to former Australia captain Allan Border and legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar.
The Pataudi Trophy, which is named after the Pataudi family (Ifthikar Ali Khan Pataudi and his son Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi) is awarded to the winner of the England-India Test series held in England. It came into existence in 2007 during India’s tour to England.
Asked whether it was fitting to have Sachin’s name being associated with the forthcoming bilateral series between India and the West Indies, Patel said: “It’s premature to discuss about it. “Nothing is finalised as yet.”
He added that the BCCI has also been planning a couple of other surprises for Tendulkar.
