Parole accused held after 10 years
Babu elder bro of gangster Vellai Ravi
Chennai: Ten years after he jumped parole, a life convict, S. Babu alias 'Aaruviral' Babu, 51 was arrested by the Anti Gangster Squad of the city police in a special operation on Saturday.
A resident of B.V. Colony in Vyasarpadi, Babu is the elder brother of notorious gangster, Vellai Ravi who was killed in a police encounter in 2007. In September 1989, Babu along with three others, Dhaaba, K.Munisamy, L.Ali was arrested by the M.K.B nagar police for murdering one Balu and was sentenced to life. While Dhaaba had come out after serving his sentence, Munisamy and Ali had died, police said.
In 1997, Babu had come out on parole and failed to report back to the jail authorities. He was nabbed four years later but once again gave the slip to the cops while being taken to be locked up in the Vellore jail. He was again arrested in 2003 near Ponneri and lodged in the Salem prison as his brother Vellai Ravi was serving a sentence in the Vellore prison at that time, police said.
They said Babu came out on parole in March 2004 and absconded. He kept shifting places to avoid detection and finally settled down at his second wife's house at Chengelpet in 2011. Acting on a tip-off, the ''gangster squad' police rushed to Chengelpet but Babu fled from there. He was finally apprehended from a hideout at Seven Hills on Friday night and handed over to the Red Hills police for further action, police said.
