New power station likely to start work soon
The Centre gave its nod for a new power station at Ramagundam
Karimnagar: Leaders of various trade unions of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) exuded confidence that the corporation would begin power production within significantly lower time period after establishing the new power station in Ramagundam. The Union government, it is learnt, has given nod for establishment of a power generation station at Ramagundam in the newly-carved out Telangana state following Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s plea during his visit to New Delhi on Saturday.
Babar Saleem Pasha, general secretary of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), felt that NTPC was having adequate infrastructure to generate 4,000 MW power within 30 months of entering into an agreement with the state government.
“Production of power can begin in a remarkably short time, considering strengths of the corporation and resources in Ramagundam. Land to an extent of 1,200 acres had already been identified for setting up the power plant. This region has many coal mines and river Godavari is a dependable source of water,” he explained.
N. Rajamallu, general secretary of Telugu Nadu Trade Union Council (TNTUC), said the NTPC’s experience would enable it to generate power much earlier than expected. “The corporation has been producing power in several parts of India since 1976. So it has its own expertise in power generation.,” he explained. Leaders of other unions too were optimistic on power production in a short time of establishing the power station.
At present, the NTPC produces 2,600 MW power with the help of its seven units. It was established in 1983. Even engineers are hopeful that the new station would begin work soon.
