Several ruling party candidates were all set to be declared unopposed to the local body bypolls

Chennai: After the scrutiny of nominations on Friday, several ruling AIADMK party candidates were all set to be declared unopposed to the local body bypolls as a majority of the political parties had decided to boycott the poll scheduled for September 18.

Though the BJP had fielded its candidates for the bypolls in several pockets, a few of the nominations from the saffron party were rejected on technical grounds. Tension prevailed in suburban

Tambaram after two nominations filed by BJP candidates were rejected by poll officials. The nominations, filed by Santhanam and Samundeswari of the BJP, were rejected on technical grounds.

Tambaram municipal sources said that as there were no other nomination papers, ruling party candidates Nagoorgani and Komala would be declared councillors next week. Similarly, in rural pockets, for several town panchayat posts, only AIADMK candidates submitted nominations and were likely to be declared unopposed.

The nominations for the vacant local body posts commenced on August 28 and the last date for the nomination was September 4. Hundreds of nominations were cancelled on technical grounds and the final list of candidates in the fray will be released on Monday, State Election Commission sources said.

For the mayor’s posts in Coimbatore, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli corporations, 51 nominations were filed. A total of 4914 nominations which were filed are under scrutiny, sources said. Counting of votes is on September 22 and the counting staff are undergoing training, sources added.
