Vishakhapatnam forum to move apex court
Sivaramakrishnan Committee opposed capital in Vijayawada yet the state government has selected the same location
Visakhapatnam:The state government’s decision to name Vijayawada as the new AP capital is likely to be entangled in legal troubles. A day after Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s announcement, a Vizag group has decided to challenge his choice in the Supreme Court.
Vizag Citizens Forum, which includes the likes of former bureaucrats C.S. Rao, is in discussions with legal experts to file a petition in the Apex Court. The members are of the opinion that the Centre-appointed Sivaramakrishnan Committee was categorically opposed to establishing the capital in Vijayawada citing various reasons, yet the state government has bypassed their suggestion and selected the same location.
They questioned the need for such a committee and spending so much of public money when its report is going to be ignored. “It will take at least three years for land acquisition in Vijayawada, which will also be an expensive affair. If the state government was to choose the state capital what was the need for such a committee. We are going to the Supreme Court,” said Mr Rao.
Other representatives of the forum raised doubts over the implementation of Mr Naidu’s grandiose plan of overall development mega and smart cities in all the 13 districts of the state when the state is facing a financial crisis.
“During his earlier nine-year stint, Mr Naidu had made many tall promises on overall development of Vizag, but nothing happened. He should give a timeline and time-bound proposals for implementation of various projects sanctioned for Vizag. There have been instances when financial resources of Vizag were used for Hyderabad,” said S.S. Sivasankar, president, Vizag Citizens Forum.
