Primary education system is weak: Rahul Gandhi

He called for a need for qualitative improvement in the standard of education

Lucknow: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday expressed concern at the standard of primary education in Uttar Pradesh and said that he found it to be rather weak.

Speaking at a function in his constituency, Amethi, to mark Teacher’s Day, he said, “There is a need for qualitative improvement in the standard of education and for this, everyone will have to work together. The foundation, which is the primary education, is weak and the progress that ought to have taken place has not been achieved.”

He said that the children are the future of the society and the progress of the society depends on the children.

“Good teachers do not create doctors or engineers, but they do make good human beings which is more important,” Congress vice-president said.

Mr Gandhi also appreciated the efforts of teachers and termed them as torch bearer of the society.

“They never retire, but render their services throughout their lives”, he said.

The Congress MP felicitated 34 teachers of his constituency and presented them with shawls and mementos. Earlier, Mr Gandhi faced a demonstration by the Bhartiya Kisan Union activists who were demanding better power supply in the area. Mr Gandhi told the protestors that the matter concerned the state government and all he could do was to request them to improve the power supply in the region.
