NLC unions told to stop strike

Chennai:The Madras high court has restrained NLC Contract and Indcoserve Workers Pro. Union (LPF) and nine other NLC workers union from proceeding with the illegal strike and indulging in any mode of agitation either within or at the gates or in the vicinity of the installations of the NLC, which disrupts or has the potential to disrupt the mining and generation activities of NLC and from preventing by threats, intimidation or otherwise free ingress and egress and to the willing workers of the NLC for attending to their work.
Justice R.S. Ramanathan granted the interim injunction and posted to October 7 further hearing of the petition filed by Neyveli Lignite Corporation limited. According to the petitioner, several litigations were initiated for regularisation of contract workers and some were pending.
Pursuant to a strike notice dated August 18 and 26, the assistant labour commissioner (central) initiated conciliation proceedings which were inconclusive and so posted to September 8. While so, on September 3, the 10 workers unions declared that their members would strike work from the 3rd shift commencing at 10 pm on September 3.
The strike was illegal for no notice of 14 days was given. From August 24, the unions have been actively pursuing the agitational approach. In the meantime, one of the unions issued a formal strike notice on August 26, proposing to strike work after September 10.
There was every reason to apprehend from September 3 mining and generation activities will be severely hampered, said the petition.
