Capital needs to develop more breathing spaces
Absence of parks acutely felt in city
Vijayawada: Parks and walking tracks in Vijayawada need immediate attention. There is also the need to beautify the city if the desire of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu of an environment-friendly capital is to be realised. The cash-trapped VMC has failed to maintain parks in the city and residents hardly have any public places to relax on weekends and holidays. Also, walking tracks built by VMC needs improvement on the lines of those in metro cities.
Locals, in collaboration with VMC, developed many of the tracks while some were developed by the VMC. However, parks like Rajiv Gandhi Park, BR Ambedkar and Raghavaiah Park and KL Rao Park in city are in shambles. Greenery is hardly seen in these parks but lovers are seen in every nook and corner of the parks, leaving visitors with children embarrassed most of the times.
Though tenders were called for maintenance of the Rajiv Gandhi and Raghavaiah parks months ago, VMC did not receive any response as contractors shied away, apprehensive that their bills wouldn’t be cleared later. However, community parks maintained by VMC and colony associations serve the purpose of major parks as they have walking tracks and gymnasiums.
There are as many as 86 community parks in the city and most of them are maintained through donations by residents of that particular colony.
