Australia uranium to give India nuclear boost

Australia has about a third of the world's recoverable uranium resources

New Delhi: A landmark civil nuclear deal inked between India and Australia here on Friday will allow the supply of much-needed uranium for the country’s nuclear plants.

The nuclear deal, signed following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, is of great importance to India.

The uranium will be used to help generate power for energy and help it move towards the goal of achieving energy security.

India and Australia, which has about a third of the world's recoverable uranium resources and exports nearly 7,000 tonnes of it a year, launched talks on uranium sales in 2012 after Canberra lifted a long-time ban on exporting the valuable yellowcake to Delhi to meet its ambitious nuclear energy programme.
