Police investigate mystery surrounding death of 22-year-old
Chennai: The Kancheepuram police on Thursday began a probe into the death of a 22-year-old youth whose body was found under mysterious circumstances on the roadside in Guduvanchery more than a year ago. The victim’s father had alleged that a policeman from Chennai city was responsible for the murder of his son.
In his complaint, Kesavan, an ex-service man working in Chennai harbour, claimed that his son, Lakshmi Kanthan was found dead with his legs and hands broken.
His body was found on the side of GST Road in Chengalpet on July 22, 2013. The police had then dismissed the death saying that it was a hit and run case and refused to probe further despite Kesavan’s pleas.
The ex-army man believes that his son was murdered because he had discovered that a law and order sub-inspector attached to the Tambaram police station was having an affair with woman home guard cadet. Kesavan believes that Lakshmi Kanthan, who was working in a private firm, had spoken about the SI’s affair to a few people, which had led to his murder by the police official.
Kesavan further alleged that his representations to the Guduvanchery police station and Chengalpet DSP were never looked into. The police always brushed aside the incident as just another accident.
After receiving the complaint now, the Kancheepuram superintendent of police C Vijay Kumar asked an officer of the rank of DSP to thoroughly investigate the incident and report back to him.
Meanwhile, Chennai city police sources said that an internal enquiry had already begun with the sub inspector. It was true that he was friendly with one woman home guard volunteer working in MEPZ, they said.
