Excavator to clean up Hussainsagar shore

Four special puja material collection counters have been set up on the banks of Hussainsagar
Hyderabad: Since August 31, 480 metric tonnes of Ganesh idols and puja material have been removed from the Hussainsagar.
The Buddha Purnima Project wing of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority this year has brought in a pontoon excavator which can excavate debris from Tank Bund’s shore, unlike the previously employed machines that could only remove material from the surface.
Meanwhile, 430 metric tonnes of debris were removed from NTR Marg and 50 tonnes from the four puja material collection counters. However, the problem faced by the 80-member team is citizens dumping idols at random junctions instead of where the cranes are positioned.
R.P. Khajuria, member, environment (BPP), said, “This year the BPP, has put to work a pontoon excavator that digs into the shoreline to remove debris.”
Four special puja material collection counters have been set up on the banks of Hussainsagar for devotees to immerse small Ganesh idols and hand over the ritual material. Despite this, most people are still immersing small idols in the lake.
Of the four collection counters, two are on Tank Bund road, one near NTR Marg and another on Necklace Road. People can perform the ritual and hand over the puja material instead of throwing it in the lake.
“Boards have been put up in front of these centres. The team deployed for immersion also directs people to hand over small idols at these centres,” Mr Khajuria added.
