Coimbatore:Reacting sharply to the DC’s expose of the ‘two shed’ system of discrimination in some tea shops in Coimbatore village, social activists and Dalit outfits demanded immediate action against tea shops which blatantly practise untouchability.
The DC, in its report on September 4, had exposed the discriminatory practice of an eatery in Panappatti serving tea and tiffin to Dalits in a run-down shed in the backyard while letting upper caste customers eat in a tiled room inside the eatery.
Social activists and Dalit outfits strongly condemned the “two shed” system prevailing in Panappatti on the city outskirts. They urged the district administration officials and police to take necessary action against the eatery owner.
Speaking to DC, C. Venmani, fo-coordinator of Tamizhar Viduthalai Iyyakam, said that the two tumbler system of discrimination was present in most parts of Coimbatore such as Ettimadai, Udayampalayam, Manikarapalayam and Thondamuthur. “The situation in Panapatti which came to light through the article of DC, is really bad. This prevails because the district administration and police department fail to take action,” Venmani said.
The Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK) strongly condemned the discriminatory practice at Panappatti. According to K. Ramakrishnan, general secretary of TPDK, DC’s report exposed the continuing practice of untouchability in Coimbatore.
Meanwhile, under instructions from M. Sudhakar, SP, district police are probing the discriminatory practice at Panappatti village.
