Capital gains to take time
Prices of things have increased ever since announcement of capital
Vijayawada: The gap between the rich and poor has increased, with the rich getting richer while the condition of the poor has remained the same or worsened. This has been the situation of the people in and around Vijayawada, ever since the capital talk began.
Everything in the city, from an autorickshaw ride to renting a double bedroom flat, has become unaffordable, even by middle or upper middle class people. While the increase in prices of various commodities and transportation was a result of economic changes, the prices of residential and commercial spaces increased after the city became the frontrunner for capital.
Now that the city’s surroundings have been declared the capital, the common man in Vijayawada fears that the cost of living would shoot up further. However, the capital status is a boon for people who own properties and a bane for those who do not have any.
“A flat which I wanted to buy since a few months ago was being sold at Rs 30 lakh. Now, the owners have raised its price to '60 lakh and refused to give it at the earlier price since the city is now the capital,” said T. Satish, an employee in a private hospital.
