Sewer waste from open drainage raises unbearable stench
Civic body litters the road by scattering the waste on the roadside
Coimbatore:Sewer waste from an open drainage channel has been piled up along the arterial Brookefields road, raising an unbearable stench on the key stretch of the city. Plastic cups, bags, table mats, garbage and sludge that choked the drainage channel running through the Brookefields Road have been cleared, but callously lined up on the roadside by the conservancy staff.
The drainage channel which carries the sewer from the western part of the city runs through Brookfields road and eventually flows into the Valankulam tank. “The civic body is perhaps waiting for an auspicious time to clear it off the road.
It has been four days since the waste has been lying like this on the road and it is almost a year since the drain has been cleaned completely,” said a sales executive of used car shop, O. Babu.
As the road connects the northern and eastern part of the city several thousands of people commute on the road, bearing the stench that the open drain emanates. Even while travelling in a four-wheeler, the foul smell wafts through the air conditioner vent, R, Boopathy a frequent commuter, said.
The sewer lines take the drainage water through the good shed road, pass through the railway under bridge and gets discharged into Valankulam tank. As underground drainage system has not been implemented effectively, the issue seems beyond resolve, said activist A. Manoj.
When contacted, the deputy commissioner of corporation, P. Gandhimathi, assured that the waste would be removed immediately.
