Vijayawada: As the state has decided to set up the capital around Vijayawada, the city needs to be developed in many ways to meet the demands of the people.
In the city, several civic projects related to roads, sewerage and underground drainage are pending with the corporation due to lack of funds. But, after the announcement of Vijayawada as the capital, the officers are expecting funds flow automatically.
Vijayawada Municipal Corporation city planner S. Chakrapani said, “The Urban Development Authority is preparing a plan for extending the city limits. As the city population may swell now, we have approved the proposal of ‘Preparation of master plan for Vijayawada’ by a consultancy. They will also discuss the projects related ring roads, approach roads and maintaining greenery in the city.”
Talking about the pending and upcoming projects in the city, he said, “We have already completed the underground drainage system, but we are yet to connect all the drainages. The repairs of roads damaged for UGD and extensions are in final stages now. We are also constructing the tanks required for water supply schemes. Sewerage treatment plants at Ajit Singh Nagar, Vambay Colony and Jakkampudi are in construction phase. An outfall drain will be constructed at Currency Nagar soon. We have already submitted the proposals to the government and expecting the funds release soon.”
The state government is already consented for the construction a flyover at Durga temple.
Referring to the project, a senior official of National Highways Authority of India said, “State R&B department prepared the project plan. The part of the flyover from Kummaripalem to Prakasam Barrage is part of NH9, but the stretch from Prakasam Barrage to Durga temple is not under the purview of NHAI. We wrote to the ministry explaining the situation here and waiting for the directions." The NHAI is now working on upgrading the Vijayawada to Gundugolanu road into a six-lane road at an estimated cost of '1684 crore.
The officer said, “We are also working on Vijayawada bypass project which will start from Chinna Avutapalli to Kaja. The works related to the four-lane road between Vijayawada and Machilipatnam will start within six months.”
