No entry for outside liquor in Chennai bars

Pvt clubs in the city will henceforth not be permitted to bring liquor from outside
Chennai: Following a recent notification issued by the Prohibition and Excise Department of the state government, members of private clubs in the city will henceforth not be permitted to bring liquor from outside to consume in the bar. The guidelines prohibit members to consume alcohol within the club premises that have been bought externally.
To this effect, an internal circulation was issued to members of a couple of prestigious clubs on Tuesday. Other clubs are in the process of following suit.
K. Sundareswaran, president of Cosmopolitan Club on Mount road, said while they haven't received any such notice so far, they will comply with it. "If there is a specific order, we shall certainly observe it," he said.
He further said the move, while generating extra income for bars in clubs, there might be a possibility of some members refraining from coming to the club. “Being denied the provision to bring their own drinks, a small segment of people might prefer to drink less or stop coming totally,” he said.
This was also echoed by T. Badradri, President of Boat Club, who said while the club will abide by the rules and issue notices to members soon, this might not go down well with a few individuals. “This may affect members who hold private parties”, he said.
