Kottayam District Collector, staff walk to office to promote benefits of walking
Kottayam: District Collector Ajith Kumar and all employees of the Collectorate walked from their residences to their place of work on Wednesday morning.
Those from faraway places, after coming in trains and buses, walked to the Collectorate from bus stands and railway stations instead of hiring autorickshaws. The Collector walking through the town instead of using his official vehicle was a new experience for the public.
The idea, the brainchild of the District Collector was to tell the public of the need to walk rather than drive around. He said the walking initiative would be replicated by all employees of the Collectorate every Wednesday.
“I would say there are many benefits of walking. Traffic congestion will be reduced, the air will be less polluted and people’s health will improve. I’m setting the example as I know that preaching alone will not yield results. Hence, I started to set an example by walking. My wish is that all people take up the baton from me and start walking instead of using vehicles”, the collector added.
Some of the employees, including his gunman also accompanied the Collector from his residence near Kanjikuzhy.
