More men end their lives in Hyderabad: National Crime Records Bureau
Suicides among married men double that of women
Hyderabad: The suicide rate among married men in Hyderabad is alarmingly high. The number of married men ending their lives every month in the city due to various reasons is two times more than that of married women.
As per police records and that of the National Crime Records Bureau five husbands commit suicide every week in Hyderabad. Marital problems and financial problems are the main reason behind these suicides.
Experts say that the 'conventional gender role' of men make them reluctant to seek help for suicidal feelings and depression, and so men are more prone to suicides.
The NCRB data said that 257 married men committed suicide in the city last year alone in Hyderabad, while only 130 married women ended their lives. The data also showed that men aged between 30 and 44 are more prone to suicides with 162 people belong to this age group ending their lives. Most of these men also belong to the middle and upper middle class.
While among unmarried men love failure, career problems and financial issues led to suicide, family problems were the main reason for the suicides of married men.
Purnima Nagaraja, a consultant psychiatrist of the Dhriti Centre for Psychological Wellness, who provide help to people with suicidal tendencies say that marital relationship problems were the main reason for depression and suicide among men belonging to the middle and upper middle class.
“Due to lack of physical as well as mental intimacy between married partners, men are stressed out. It happens due to increased work hours, and lack of proper communication. If both husband and wife work and if they have different shifts, they hardly have time to even meet each other,” she said, adding that several men had approached her organisation with these problems.
Purnima said that most of their clients were working in the IT sector and MNCs in the city. Experts say that men aged between 27 to 45 are usually ambitious and want to make money, and when their dreams are not fulfilled they get depressed.
The NCRB data showed that not even a single divorced man committed suicide in Hyderabad last year while three widowers ended their lives. The data also showed that the suicide rate is higher among men than women when the country as a whole is taken into consideration.
