Centre to come up on land belonging to Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research

Bengaluru: Bharat Ratna Prof. C.N.R. Rao announced that a new Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences will be set up in the city in the next few months. “Everything has been done, along with official permissions,” he said at the curtain raiser for the 7th edition of the Bangalore India Nano conference, organised by the IT/ BT Department, state government.
The centre will come up on a piece of land that belongs to the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, founded by Prof. Rao himself. “It is a 14-acre area near Nelamangala, provided by the state government,” he said. Prof. Rao said that a director has been appointed and that the central government's approval on the nomination is awaited. “When a director is finalised, I think there will be tremendous chances of having a nano park in the city," he said. "Nehru Centre (JNCASR) to which I belong has already put up a compound wall around the area which belongs to the centre.
It will become active hopefully in four-five months even earlier than that as soon as the new director takes over,” he added.The Prof. CNR Rao Bangalore India Nano Science Award will also be presented during the conference, to a distinguished personality with significant achievements in the field of nanotechnology. Prof. Rao is the Chairman of the jury panel.
The previous recipients of the award have been Prof. C.N.R. Rao in 2007, Prof. Dipankar Chakravorty in 2008, Prof. Ajay K. Sood in 2010, Dr. G. Sundararajan in 2011, Prof. G.U. Kulkarni in 2012 and Prof. Ashutosh Sharma in 2013.
Bangalore India Nano 2014 will feature an international conference, a technology exhibition, a research-industry collaboration hub, a Nano for the Young programme and the awards. Chief Scientific Officers, policy makers, VPs, directors, heads of organisations and advisors from government, industry and research institutions will participate.
