The number had come down from 900 to 190 spots this year
Chennai: The Chennai corporation on Monday claimed that the total number of water stagnation points identified in the city had reduced drastically. The number had come down from 900 to 190 spots this year, said Mayor Saidai Duraisamy, at a meeting of officials from various departments at Ripon Buildings on Monday.
Officials from the public works department, metro water, public health department, Slum Clearance Board, the collectorate, meteorological department, police, fisheries department, Tangedco, MTC, fire and rescue department, Aavin, highways department, defence and other service departments participated in the meet.
The mayor said that the stagnation spots would be reduced further to reach the ambitious target of nil stagnation in the city.
“The city witnessed no stagnation following the recent 10 cm rainfall which shows that we are progressing towards the target,” he added.
The mayor also instructed the corporation officials to get a ‘disaster management’ manual with the details of all officials from various departments to be published on October 1.
The Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewage Board (CMWSSB) was instructed to make sure that all the 219 pumping stations remained in working condition during the rains.
Tangedco was asked not to dig up roads once the monsoon set in. The Corporation also asked the Electricity Board to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to telecom offices functioning at Pookadai, Anna Salai, Haddows road and K K Nagar. The defence services, police and Red Cross were also requested to provide manpower if any disaster struck this monsoon.
