Designs with a touch of magic

Designer Gaurav Gupta who is in the city, talks about his latest collection, trends and what’s in this season

Mumbai: Gaurav Gupta’s clothes are traditional and contemporary at the same time, resplendent yet suited to the sensibility of someone young at heart. His recent collection, Wink of Nyx, which was showcased at the India Couture Week this August, is a dazzling display of dresses in colours like peach, orange, grey and red complimented by sequined motifs inspired by nature.

Gaurav, who is in the city for an exhibition of his collection, says, “It is inspired by the Greek goddess of night, also fairies and fantasy, which render a magical feeling to the clothes. It is as though royalty are meeting from all over the world and having a party.” Interacting with his city clientele on his two-day visit, Gaurav feels that his clients here are “quite discerning”.

“The clients in Hyderabad are very sophisticated, but they are also slightly conservative. They want to be stylish, but also fit into the whole family category. They like edgy clothes, but not too much bling,” he adds. Among Tollywood actresses, the designer says that Shruti Haasan is frequently seen wearing his clothes and that he will be dressing Samantha very soon. In the present day and age of social networking, when celebrities think twice before repeating a garment, Gaurav feels that if one feels confident in a particular garment, it doesn’t matter if they have worn it before or not.

“Our clothes are very noticeable, and the style can’t be changed because they are made as per measurements. But since people feel confident in them and love the clothes so much, they end up wearing it often,” he informs. Even with the festive season setting in, the designer adds that one should go for what they feel confident in, rather than settling for recent trends. Gaurav adds, “Personally for me, colours like gold, red and orange are in this season. But my advice to both men and women would be to find their own sense of style instead of following trends. They should be eager and explore more.”
