Shatter-proof vehicles for ministers a far cry

State Government yet to okay proposal
Thiruvananthapuram: A proposal to provide a bullet-proof or shatter-proof vehicle to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy still remains on paper. Following the attack on the Chief Minister in Kannur in October last, the State police proposed a bullet-proof vehicle or a shatter-proof windscreen for his vehicle. But the State Government is yet to okay the proposal.
"It seems the proposal was torpedoed by some bureaucrats at the Secretariat. Not only this, many other proposals of the Police Department have been kept pending for long at the Secretariat," said a senior police officer.
If ever the Chief Minister were to come under attack, the blame would squarely fall on the police, said another officer of the department. The cost of bullet-proof vehicles starts from Rs 60 lakh, whereas shatter-proof windscreens which could resist stone pelting could be provided to existing vehicles at a much lesser cost.
