Hyderabad city had a rainy weekend
Hyderabad: The city experienced heavy rains throughout Sunday resulting in inundation of several low-lying areas. A total of 18.3 mm rainfall was recorded till 8.30 pm on Sunday, bringing daily life to a standstill.
Several parts of the city were inundated and trees were uprooted in a few parts. Right from the CM’s Camp Office, Banjara Hills Road No. 2, No. 12, Jubilee Hills Road No. 36, Yousufguda, Srinagar Colony, Maitri Vanam and areas around Ameerpet, colonies in Circle 9 including Amberpet No. 6 junction, Himayatnagar, Lower Tank Bund, VST Circle, Kacheguda and Fever Hospital junctions witnessed heavy water-logging.
Three complaints of trees being uprooted were received from New Nallakunta, Lakdi-ka-Pul and Nampally. GHMC emergency teams attended to these complaints.
Jeedimetla received the highest rainfall with 21 mm, followed by Shapurnagar with 20.7 mm, Jubilee Hills with 19.2 mm, Srinagar Colony with 17.5 mm, Madhapur with 17.2 mm, Chilkalguda with 15.25 mm, Uppal with 14.2 mm, Malkajgiri with 14 mm and West Marredpally with 13 mm.
Rain disrupted daily activities and traffic came to a standstill at many junctions.
With the many Ganesh pandals installed across the city, commuters faced a tough time. Many devotees who had stepped out to seek the blessings of the deity were in for some trouble as not many pandals were equipped with shelters.
Several also faced injuries on the roads due to the potholes that were concealed by the rainwater. GHMC teams have been posted at low-lying areas. Met officials, meanwhile, have predicted heavy rains in and around the city for the next 48 hours, till the night of September 2.
The maximum temperature also dipped to almost 28º Celsius and the number of daylight hours recorded on August 31 was the lowest in the month.
Deficit eases but big gap remains
The deficit rainfall across both states eased due to the four days of incessant rains. The rain deficit in coastal AP improved from 49 to 25 per cent, Telangana 52 to 39 per cent and in Rayalaseema by 11 per cent. Despite the rains, Telangana and coastal AP are yet to overcome the deficit. Met officials said that after September 2, if another low pressure area forms over the Bay of Bengal, the deficit across both regions can be filled.
In Telangana, Adilabad experienced deficit rainfall of 51 per cent, Hyderabad 46, Karimnagar 45, Khammam 46, Mahbubnagar 35, Medak, Nalgonda 55, Nizamabad 62, Rangareddy 50 and Warangal 49 per cent. Telangana recorded a shortfall of 3 per cent with 212.3 mm of rainfall against the normal of 218.8 mm. Andhra received 265.2 mm against normal of 433.4 mm from June 1.
