Ambivalent status baffles EMC staff
Director of Medical Education Dr V.Geetha said that a high-level sub-committee has been formed
Kochi: Confusion over the stand-alone status given to the staff of Ernakulam Government Medical College persists with the Director of Medical Education Dr V.Geetha saying that a high-level sub-committee has been formed to decide on it and once the Government order comes out consequent to the committee’s decision, the ambiguity could be cleared. There were reports that the stand-alone status meant that doctors from other Government medical colleges could not be transferred to EMC and the DMO had said that only deputations could be allowed. But the DMO said the Government order in that regard would bring clarity on the issue of transfers.
A high-level sub-committee consisting of PWD Minister V.K.Ebrahim Kunju, Health Minister V.S.Sivakumar, Co-operation Minister C.N.Balakrishnan and the secretaries of these departments had been formed to decide on the EMC issue. According to a top official, this committee had taken a decision to allow transfers from other Government medical colleges to Ernakulam Government Medical College while the staff at EMC were given the stand- alone status for five years during which time they wouldn’t be transferred.
He also said a Government Order (GO) in this regard was yet to come out. There were also reports that the Principal of EMC, Dr Praveen Lal, had also sought more teachers for the college through transfers. However, it is understood that he had only sought for vacancies at the college to be filled as per State Government norms, since the existing staff conformed only to MCI stipulations. “He has not specified the manner in which the vacancies should be filled. It can be through new appointments also”, said an official at the medical college.
