Alert justified DC report on sex tourism
Additional DGP orders order to district police to curb growing social menace

Alappuzha: A year after Deccan Chronicle published an investigative report on the thriving sex tourism in the houseboat sector here, Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) A. Hemachandran has issued an order to the district police chief to take immediate action in curbing the growing social menace. K.K.Balachandran, superintendent of police, Alappuzha district, confirmed that an order had been received from the State Intelligence recently. “I can’t divulge the details, but I’ve given instructions to all officials concerned in this regard”, he said.
A DC report on July 26, 2013, had exposed the racket. Three women were actively involved in the business in the country’s hub of houseboats. Following the report, the Special Branch of the State Police took up investigation.District Collector N. Padmakumar said the administration had received details of the alert a week ago, he said.
Meanwhile, N. Sreekumar, general secretary, All Kerala Houseboat Owners Association (AKHOA), who had registered a petition with both District Collector N.Padmakumar and District Police Chief Uma Behra, said the police had to be firm if they were to eliminate such elements from the industry. “Sex tourism will not help the houseboat industry. The association has always raised its voice against such issues. We strongly demand police action against such rackets”, he said.
