Shruti Haasan inspired by dad to turn veggie

Shruti says that going meatless won’t stop her from trying out new cuisines
Chennai: For anyone who follows her on social forums, this should come as a shock. Shruti Haasan is the most pronounced of foodies, and makes it a point to go to the most popular restaurant in the city she is visiting, but she is now changing her food habits.
“I grew up in the most carnivorous way possible, devouring whatever I could. In fact, beef was my favourite, a medium rare steak for me anytime! But I gave up beef almost a year and half ago. When I came to Chennai this time, I decided to stop eating non-veg after a conversation with my dad. He’s not a vegetarian, but takes the utmost care in what he eats,” she says. It made sense to adopt a different approach.
Was fitness a motive behind the change? “I actually feel lighter now since I stopped eating meat! This doesn’t mean I’m going to stop trying out new cuisines; I’m a huge fan of Turkish and Japanese food. But the bane of my life is my love for south Indian saapaad! Biryani, potatoes, sambar, buttery dishes, everything. For me, working out is not necessarily to get toned, but more for the endorphins released. Early in my career, for movies like Luck, I hit the gym like crazy and got abs and was super-skinny, but then I realised I wasn’t eating anything! So now I maintain a healthy balance,” Shruti laughs.
On the movie front, she is in Chennai to finish up her next Tamil flick, Poojai, and the actress is looking forward to the release. “I’ve never looked at my films as ‘mass’ or ‘artsy’, all we’re trying to do is make sure the audiences enjoy it. But in terms of genre, yes, it is a new look for me after films like 3 and 7am Arivu in Tamil and working with director Hari and Vishal was thoroughly enjoyable; so it should be interesting to see how this pans out.”
