Sewer works progress at a snail’s pace

With less than 90 per cent of the work done, it has been lying incomplete since six years
Hyderabad: The multiple projects for modernisation of sewer lines and construction of underground drainage taken up in the city have been moving at a slow pace since last six years, even though the deadlines have passed. The incomplete works since years have put road users to great inconvenience as the dug-up roads are yet to be restored. The sewer line works under JNNURM scheme
“rehabilitation and strengthening of sewerage system” in old city started in 2008 at a cost of Rs 400 crores.
With less than 90 per cent of the work done, it has been lying incomplete since six years. This is causing lot of inconvenience, as the roads dug up for laying sewer lines are yet to be restored. The entire work, that was divided into two zones, has further been divided into three phases, with each phase
assigned to one company on contract. The sewerage master plan has been prepared to meet the population demand up to 2021 for an area of 351.63 sq.km.
According to the original timeline, the project was supposed to be over by 2012 end. Likewise, the Serilingampally underground drainage work, that was launched five years back, at an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore, is also incomplete.
“Though the drainage line laying and extension work is completed in the region, land acquisition for the sewerage treatment plant has remained a hurdle to wind up the work,” said an official of the Water Board.
The underground drainage work, taken up with an initial funding of Rs 75 crore, is still pending with less than four km pipeline laying done, while another km pipeline is yet to be laid. A senior official of the Water Board admitted that shortage of funds was indeed a problem and hence they have been seeking extension after extension leading to the delay of the project.
Similar is the case with the Godavari Phase I water project with 186 km pipeline being laid from Yellampally of Karimnagar to the periphery of the city. Explaining the deadlock of the project, one of the water Board directors said, “The Godavari Phase I works will be completed once the mains work starts. It needs another '300 crore, we have sought additional fund from the government.”
