Potholes stall traffic

Vehicle queue stretches over 1km at Kundanoor Jn
Kochi:Kochiites, especially those travelling through the National Highway 47, experienced their worst traffic jam on Saturday when serpentine queue of vehicles were witnessed at vital junctions like Kundanoor, Kathrikadavu bridge, Edapally-Palarivattom stretch and Kaloor.
The worst was at the Kundanoor Junction where the long queue of vehicles could be seen stretching over one km. The reason is the same everywhere -the big potholes filled with sledge after the incessant rains since Friday slowed down vehicle movement at the signals.
Cops had a tough time controlling the vehicle flow, with even Kochi DCP R Nishantini seen herself taking over the task at the Kundanoor Jn. Despite the woes for the citizens, the National Highway Authority of India officials continue to go on the road repair works. The work of laying interblocking tiles at vital junctions like Kundanoor, Vytilla, Palarivattom and Edapally along the National Highway has been virtually suspended half way, worsening the situation.
"My car was trapped for nearly an hour in the morning at Kundanoor while proceeding to Vytilla. While returning I could see the situation only get worse at the Junction with the long queue of vehicles seen stretching till the bridge before the Lakeshore Hospital, a good one-km distance," said Durga K S, a resident of Panangad.
"I could see an ambulance with ICU unit trapped just 100 metres away from the Vytilla signal for half an hour just because a private luxury bus conducting service to Bangalore parked at the roadside along the busy stretch waiting for commuters during the heavy traffic jam," said Sainath, who was coming from Alapuzha to Kaloor.
