Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister to set up fast-track courts for crime against women

Mr Yadav blamed the BJP for rumour mongering and insisted there was no law and order problem in UP

Lucknow: The Akhilesh government in Uttar Pradesh has decided to set up fasttrack courts in all districts to deal with pending cases of violence against women and those cases involving women as accused.

The decision was taken during a state Cabinet meeting here on Friday.

Talking to reporters after the Cabinet meeting, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said, “The cabinet has decided to constitute fast-track courts in all the districts to sort out cases of violence against women and criminal cases pending against women. This will ensure speedy justice to women.”

The Akhilesh government, since the past one year, has been facing flak for rising incidents of crime against women and this step is likely to put the pressure on the perpetrators of such crime.

The chief minister, in reply to another question, said that regarding the flood as well as drought situation in the state, he would soon send a letter to the central government and seek financial assistance.

“Crops have been destroyed due to floods in some p[arts of the state and due to drought conditions in other parts. I will be writing to the centre for help in a day or two,’ he said. Mr Yadav, while referring to the continuing power crisis in UP, reiterated his allegation that the state was not getting its quota of coal to run power units and was also being deprived of its power quota from the Centre.

“We again request the centre through the media to ensure our quota of coal and power in order to improve the power situation in the state,” he stated. To another question, Mr Yadav accused the BJP of blowing out of proportion minor incidents of violence in Uttar Pradesh

“There is no law and order problem as such and the government is keeping a close watch on trouble makers. The government has acted promptly whenever any issue came to light but BJP workers are adept at rumor mongering and tend to blow small incidents out of proportion,” he said.

He said that the Opposition parties were trying to malign his government to derive political mileage.
