Suspected helper to Indian Mujahideen militants held in Munnar

Jaleel Aktharinvolved in arranging shelter for IM activists Waqas Ahamad and Tehesin Akthar
Kochi: A team of Munnar police on Friday apprehended Jaleel Akthar, suspected to be involved in arranging shelter for Indian Mujahideen activists Waqas Ahamad and Tehesin Akthar, from a hotel in Munnar. The police laid a trap for him based on inputs provided by intelligence agencies, but his arrest has not been recorded officially so far.
Jaleel, a native of Bihar, disappeared following the arrest of Waqas and Tehesin in a joint operation by the National Investigation Agency and Delhi police in March. Waqas was arrested from Ajmer while the other from an area on Indo-Nepal border.
The interrogation of the two revealed that they had stayed in Munnar for nearly three months. Jaleel, 27, running a tea stall in Munnar for many years, had disappeared after the arrest of the two and the NIA was in search of him.
An official in Munnar police station confirmed that Jaleel had been taken into custody and that senior police men, including NIA officials, were questioning him. He declined to provide any further details. The investigation agencies hope to get useful information from Jaleel about the likely sleeping cells of the IM in the state.
Security agencies in the country suspect that terrorist outfits in the country are using Kerala as a safe hideout as well as a place for planning strikes elsewhere in the country. The NIA has filed a chargesheet in a case connected with the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) conducting a secret camp at Vagamon in Idukki district in 2007.
