Karthikeyan awaits Antony’s nod to step down as Speaker

AK Anthony denied discussion over any political development
Thiruvananthapuram: Speaker G. Karthikeyan, who met AICC working committee member A. K. Antony on Thursday, apprised him of his views on the liquor row and sought Mr Antony’s concurrence to step down as Speaker. Though their talks lasted for over 40 minutes, Mr Antony told reporters that they had not discussed any political developments.
“Antony patiently heard him and GK told him that his decision to step down as Speaker should not be taken as a sign of weakness as he wanted to get active in the party,” said a source.
Congress leaders are of the opinion that he need not quit as he has been doing well in the Speaker’s role. But KPCC spokesperson Pandalam Sudhakaran said that amidst the bar row, the GK issue had been sidelined.
“So far the party has not discussed anything about GK’s plan. Senior leaders have always felt that GK need not quit,” he said. He also added that with the latest development in the titanium case and the bar row, KPCC leadership would not try to take up the GK move. But GK is upset with reports that he has been eying a cabinet berth when he is keen to become active in party politics.
