Sankaranarayanan to meet AK, eyeing convener post?

Former Governor of Maharashtra had sought the advice of Mr Antony before putting in his papers
Thiruvananthapuram: The ambitious old leaders of the Congress who are now jobless are seeking to enter active politics. Former Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan, 82, will meet AICC working committee member A. K. Antony here soon. He is reported to be eyeing the UDF convener post. While former Governor M. M. Jacob, 87, is keen on having a party post, Mr Vakkom Purushothaman, 86, will remain as a staunch party worker. However, KPCC leaders have expressed different views on their future plans.
AICC general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said on Thursday that those above 70 should not continue in political posts. Sources said Mr Sankaranarayanan had sought the advice of Mr Antony before putting in his papers as Governor on Sunday. He has always been a loyalist of ‘A’ faction. Kannur MP K. Sudhakaran is also trying for the UDF convener post. KPCC general secretary K. P. Anil Kumar told DC that merit should be the major criterion for a leader in a key position.
“Only those who are good in their job should be entrusted with crucial posts,” he said. Mr Jacob told DC that if the AICC leadership asked him, he would accept any crucial posts. However, Mr Vakkom said that old people should not hold any official posts. Another KPCC general secretary M. Liju said that a leader should take a personal decision on holding a post. He also added that the party should seriously discuss the issue soon.
