British Council gets new head for South India
Meikwei Barker replaces Paul Sellers who is transferred to Rome
Chennai: Ms Meikwei Barker has taken over as Director, South India of the British Council from Mr Paul Sellers who is transferred to Rome. Ms Barker comes with a rich teaching experience. The dup address a formal press conference on Thursday at the library premises.
While the focus may be on regional languages in India, the British Council has rendered yeoman service in keeping the English language skills in Indians alive with a variety of programmes and apps. Mr Sellers recalled how the smartphone revolution has helped the British Council take their particular language skills to the young people and job aspirants in remotest areas of the six states of southern India, including the latest Telangana, through apps to try and help cover the employability gap, which is huge between the rural and urban segments .
Ms Barker is hoping to carry forward the strengths of the council’s work here which is to do with conducting an English language appraisal test, digital partnership teaching 25 million young learners and the education package, including the government’s ‘study abroad’ programme and the social entrepreneurs scheme in association with Diageo through which 3,000 women were trained this year.
Ms Barker probably has her work cut out as she could begin by imparting English language skills to the security staff at the British Council as well as some lessons in etiquette.
