Narasimha Rao’s name was recommended for country’s highest civilian award

Hyderabad: Telangana state government has sought Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian award, to former prime minister late P.V. Narasimha Rao for his immense contribution to the economic development of the country through his reforms. Padma Awards committee, headed by chief secretary, Dr Rajiv Sharma, took a decision to recommend Narasimha Rao’s name again for the country’s highest award to the Centre.

Born on June 28, 1921, in Karimnagar district, the former PM who rose from being a grassroots level Congress worker to head the country, earned international recognition and put India on global map through his sweeping economic reforms during his tenure as prime minister between 1991 and1996.
Earlier, he was Chief Minister of undivided AP in 1971-73, after the violent Telangana movement.

Narasimha Rao’s name was recommended for the nation’s highest award earlier in 2013, when N. Kiran Kumar Reddy was the chief minister, but the UPA government ignored it. The committee shortlisted half the names including that of artist Laxman Aelay, who designed the Telangana state emblem and also emblem for the police, it is learnt.
