Supreme Court nudges Prime Minister, CMs on tainted ministers
SC recommends not to induct criminals into his ministry
New Delhi: By refusing to prescribe disqualification from ministership for tainted people, the Supreme Court on Wednesday put the issue of decriminalising politics back into the executive’s court. It strongly advised that the Prime Minister and chief ministers should not induct into their teams those against whom charges have been framed in criminal and corruption cases.
The BJP said in reaction that the Supreme Court endorsed the idea put forward by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whereas the Opposition Congress said, “Now the onus is on the PM.”
Leaving the issue to the wisdom of the heads of government at the Centre and in the states, the apex court noted that the PM and chief ministers should not recommend such names to the President and governors and observed that the nation has reposed faith in them for "good governance".The SC hoped that the PM would not, in the national interest, induct such "unwarranted elements" into his ministry.
