Paper bags bring ‘special’ tag to pupils
Students of Snehanilayam making paper carry bags with newspapers
KOCHI: They are termed special children but they are determined to be very special, especially in the drive to protect environment. The 30 odd students of Snehanilayam at Vazhakkala, a special school, are now engaged in making paper carry bags with newspapers supplied by students of normal schools.
Students of over 80 CBSE and State syllabus schools in Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kottayam are being encouraged by workers of Plan@earth, an NGO, to donate two old newspapers daily for a week.
Launched on World Environment Day on June 5 and now taken to Rajagiri Higher Secondary School, Kalamassery, newspapers thus collected are taken to Snehanilayam where special students turn them into paper carry bags. Then students distribute them to the local shops free of cost. Shops are thus encouraged to abandon plastic carry bags.
"Earlier we made paper bags with the help of inmates of Keezhmadu Blind School, Aluva. Now we have roped in Snehanilayam. More than 35,000 paper bags have been distributed and we target 1 lakh paper bags this year," said Mujeeb Muhammed, president, plan@earth.
Rev.Fr. Vargheese Kachapilly, Rajagiri school director, school principal Jose and Help Other People Earn (Hope) coordinator Rasheed are supporting the activities.
