New Delhi: Swami Aseemanand, one of the accused in the Samjahuta blast case of 2007 was granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday.
Aseemanand was arrested in 2010 for allegedly being compliant to the terror strikes that took place between 2006 and 2008, that also include the Samjhauta blast case in 2007. Nearly 70 were killed on the train headed from Delhi to Lahore in Pakistan. The charges against him include murder and sedition.
After he was arrested, he confessed in court in December 2011 to his role in the terror attacks he was charged with. He also implicated the RSS. However, he later retracted his confessions, alleging that he had been coerced to make them by investigating officials.
In 2013, a special court of the National Investigation Authority (NIA) had dismissed his bail plea on the grounds that some of the accused in the blast case were at large and Aseemanand could tamper with the investigation. The court also said that his bail would be detrimental to the prosecution.
