Never ending parking woes

One-ways add to chaos at T Nagar, say shoppers
Chennai: Parking in and around T Nagar has become almost impossible for drivers of cars and two-wheelers too as police have made almost all roads one-way. Shoppers complain that they are forced to leave their vehicles at Valluvar Kottam or Saidapet and proceed towards T Nagar or face the one-way chaos, wasting fuel and time. “T Nagar congestion is an age-old problem. During early 2000, haphazard parking was a major problem, and now commuting through T Nagar is a major task,” said. S. Rathnam Nadar, a retailer in T Nagar.
“Shops have become multi-storeyed buildings and multi-storeyed outlets have become shopping complexes, attracting more customers, adding more pressure on T Nagar,” said E Sridhar, a resident of West Mambalam. Three of my neighbours sold their ancestral property due to the congestion. Residing in T Nagar is annoying.” “Besides being a commercial place, T Nagar is also a transit route for Saidapet and Mambalam and this invites more congestion.
There is a need for long-term solutions; driving through T Nagar is such an irritating routine for most of us,” said an MTC driver at T Nagar bus terminal, the recent one-way system having only added to their woes. “Has the one-way system resulted in vehicles speeding away at 40 km per hour? Even auto drivers are finding it difficult, with the one-way traffic systems,” said S. Kadhir, an auto driver.
T Nagar legislator V. P Kalairajan, who has been the MLA of the region for the last eight years, said that so far more than 700 hawkers had been moved into the nearby Corporation complex to reduce congestion. There was also a proposal to make the T Nagar bus terminal a three-storeyed structure, which would have basement parking and also house a bus terminal and shopping complex at the elevated levels. Further, the city corporation had also planned to extend the Usman Road flyover to decongest T Nagar, he added.
