Enhance security in temples, mutts: Hindu Munnani

Youth’s entry into mutt triggers outfit’s plea

Chennai: The Hindu Munnani, which has been protesting against the ‘serial’ murders of Hindu leaders in Tamil Nadu, has now shifted its focus to the lack of adequate security arrangements in temples and holy mutts across the state, voicing its apprehensions of a possible breach by ‘anti-social elements’.
Hindu Munnani founder-convener Ramagopalan has called upon the state government to step up security and safeguard these religious institutions from such threats.
He said that their suspicions had been aroused, seeing media reports on the clandestine entry into the Thiruppanandal Kasi Mutt (near Kumbakonam) by a 22-year-old youth. The mutt staff caught him and handed him over to the police. It is said that he had also taken photos of the mutt.
It was alleged that the youth was involved in smuggling idols. “This incident has caused apprehensions about the possibility of a planned attack on mutts or temples. Hence, the state government and police should bestow serious attention to this case and step up vigil and security,” Ramagopalan urged.
Further, he lauded the government’s efforts in nabbing those responsible for the murder within a year’s time of two of its leaders, S. Vellaiappan, state general secretary, and Suresh Kumar alias Padi Suresh, Tiruvalluvar district president of Hindu Munnani.
