Congress slams BJP over coal verdict

SC said that all mine deals after 1993 was illegally allotted
New Delhi: The Supreme Court verdict that all mine deals after 1993 was illegally allotted has kicked up a storm between the BJP and the Congress.
AICC spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said the verdict had once again brought out what was said in the report of a standing committee earlier, which had concluded that the required transparency was not maintained in coal block allocations since 1993.
“It was Manmohan Singh who started to issue advertisements for coal block allocations, which had not happened from 1993 to 1998. A screening committee at the state level was also set up then,” he said.
He said the SC’s order had proved “totally wrong” the allegations levelled by the BJP and the NDA against the Congress. Congress leader and former Union minister Manish Tewari said their “stand has been vindicated as this is precisely what the Congress has been saying”.
The ruling BJP, however, treaded cautiously. “We are studying the Supreme Court ruling and will come out with our response only after that,” BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held a meeting with finance minister Arun Jaitley and power and coal minister Piyush Goyal to discuss bottlenecks in the power sector and also deliberated on the fallout of the apex court’s view.
On the SC order, Mr Goyal said, “This has brought finality and closure to a dispute that has been there for many years. The economy can now move forward rapidly rather being cast
with the shadow of uncertainty.”
