PM Narendra Modi turns down proposal to upgrade SPG cover

New Delhi: Setting an example for his senior ministerial colleagues on cutting down government expenditure Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shot down a proposal from the Special Protection Group (SPG) to upgrade his convoy, specially the car in which travels.

Presently Mr Modi continues to use the same BMW bullet-proof car that was being used by his predecessor Dr Manmohan Singh. Government sources said that the elite SPG, which is responsible for providing security to the PM, had moved a proposal a few days ago that the present convoy being used by the PM should be replaced.

However, Mr Modi refused permission saying, “Such expenditure involving government money was avoidable and that the present motorcade need not be replaced.’’

As of now the SPG is following the same security drill that it did for Dr Singh’s motorcade also which comprises two BMW bullet-proof cars along with at least four BMW SUVs, a jammer and an ambulance providing the inner cordon security ring whenever the PM is on the move. In addition, there are other vehicles of Delhi Police’s Security Wing that are used as pilots and escorts in the Prime Minister’s motorcade.
