Thiruvananthapuram: Only five colleges in the state have the approval of the Director General of Shipping (DGS) for running marine engineering courses in the State.
The colleges are Euro Tech Maritime Academy, Kochi, Institute of Marine Engineers (India),Kochi, National Maritime Academy under the Indian Maritime University,Kochi, Kunjali Marakkar School of Marine Engineering of Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT),Kochi and Univan Maritime Training Academy,Kochi.
The recognition of the DGS is necessary to get a job in the shipping industry. Admissions to various courses are done by the institutions concerned.

Marine Engineering is basically Mechanical Engineering and deals with giant marine engines and auxiliary machines on-board merchant vessels. The courses offered in the field included Diploma in Marine Engineering, Bachelor of Engineering in Marine Engineering, Bachelor of Technology in Marine Engineering Bachelor of Technology in Naval architecture and Ocean Engineering. B Tech courses was four years, post graduate course was two years and diploma course two years.
The fee structure of Marine Engineering varies from institute to institute. The amount of fees is as low as Rs. 2,20,000 for the whole course in Indian Maritime University and is as high as Rs. 8,00,000 in the Haldia Institute of Maritime Studies and Research (HIMSA),Haldia, West Bengal.
