‘I’ group dumps Sudheeran
Section feels the bar row could have been avoided
Thiruvananthapuram: KPCC president V.M. Sudheeran is now facing the heat from the Congress ‘I’ faction which had supported him on the bar issue earlier. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala criticised him at a press meet here on Saturday saying Mr Sudheeran should have avoided the comments he had made against the government some time ago. He was referring to Mr Sudheeran’s charge that the government had demanded an order from the High Court implying that the Advocate-General had been keeping mum. This comment has forced the leaders to go up in arms against Mr Sudheeran.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that Congress president Sonia Gandhi has expressed displeasure over the turn of events with the government and the party being at loggerheads. A section of the Congress leaders felt that the raging bar row could have been avoided in the light of the High Court’s views. A top Congress leader said that the Congress was also following in the footsteps of the CPM where party secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and Opposition leader V. S. Achuthanandan had been taking cudgels against each other.
“Sudheeran is obsessed with his image and for that he has increased the factionalism in the party. When the Congress faced severe drubbing in the Lok Sabha elections nationally, Kerala could salvage its image. When a leader like Chief Minister Oommen Chandy is being shown in bad light, it is the party which also suffers,” said a senior Congress leader. A few days back, political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Ahmed Patel, had intervened in the controversy and spoken to Mr Chandy, Mr Sudheeran and Mr Chennithala.
The AICC is worried that a leader who should take the initiative to sort out the differences in the party is trying to create rift between the party and the government.
