Union Home Minister Harshvardhan cracks whip on AIIMS, spares doctor

MCI had directed the AIIMS with the CBI, Chennai, for appropriate action
New Delhi: Despite the CBI recommendation to initiate Regular Departmental Action (RDA) for major penalty against Dr AC Ammini, head of Endocrinology at AIIMS, the Union health ministry exonerated her with a advice to be more careful in future.
The Medical Council of India (MCI) had directed the AIIMS with the CBI, Chennai, for appropriate action. It was found that during an inspection of Vinayak Missions Medical College and Hospital in Karaikal, Ammini allegedly accepted lodging, boarding and other hospitality from the college, violating the laid norms.
On May 29, 2013, Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) of MCI, Simmi R Nakra, in a letter to Director, AIIMS, had written to the CBI, Chennai, recommending appropriate action. However, the health ministry, on June 30, closing the matter ordered that keeping in view the totality of the facts and circumstances we should convey to Dr Ammini to be more careful in future.
Health ministry also advised that MCI should be requested to make arrangements for their inspectors to avoid such situation in the future. Union health minister Harsh Vardhan on Saturday said all systems in the country’s central hospitals, including AIIMS, have been placed under critical review to end systemic and symptomatic corruption.
