Sushil Kumar appointed Sports Brand Ambassador of Delhi
New Delhi: Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung on Friday announced the decision to appoint wrestler Sushil Kumar as the Sports Brand Ambassador of Delhi Government.
He also doubled sports budget for the capital to Rs 44 lakh.
Jung said it is a matter of great pride that eight Delhi sportspersons have brought laurels for the country and Delhi in the 2014 Commonwealth Games held at Glasgow.
"The efforts made by Sushil Kumar, Yogeshwar Dutt and Amit Dahiya for the gold medal winning performance are indeed a proud moment for India.
"The silver medals bagged by Bajrang Kumar, Rajiv Tomar, Shreyasi Singh and bronze medals bagged by Manavjit Singh Sandhu, Pawan Kumar are something which have strengthened our belief in the budding talented youngsters of capital," Jung said at a felicitation ceremony of the medal winners.
The ceremony was organised by the Directorate of Education. Of these eight sportspersons, six are wrestlers and two are shooters.
The newly appointed Sports Brand Ambassador of Delhi, Sushil Kumar, has represented the country in the Olympic Games three times -- in 2004 Athens Olympics, 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2012 London Olympics -- in 66kg free style category.
He is the only wrestler of the country who have won medals in back-to-back Olympic Games.
