Kalam urged the medical community not to give ‘diagnostic pain’ to patients

Kochi: Former President APJ Abdul Kalam on Friday asked doctors and nurses to consider each patient as a VIP and receive them with a smile on face and compassion in heart. He was addressing a function marking the golden jubilee of Lourdes Hospital, here.
The former President listed six virtues for doctors and nurses and these are generosity, ethics, tolerance, perseverance, concentration and knowledge. He reminded them that medical science was growing day-by-day and updating their knowledge was crucial for their profession.
Kalam urged the medical community not to give ‘diagnostic pain’ to patients. He defined diagnostic pain as demands from doctors for “unnecessary medical tests.” The doctors should also take it as a mission to teach the family members of patients about prevention of diseases, he suggested.
Varapuzha Archbishop Rev Dr Francis Kallarackal, who presided over the function, said that Lourdes Hospital was started by former Archbishop Rev Dr Joseph Attipetti in 1965 following a visit to the Catholic pilgrim centre of Lourdes in southern France. “Archbishop Attipetti chose Pachalam as venue for the hospital considering the poor people living in the nearby islands,” he said. The hospital which began with 60 beds in that year has now grown to a multi-specialty one with 650 beds and provide most modern treatment at affordable cost.
Prof K.V. Thomas, MP, Mayor Tony Chammany, Hibi Eden, MLA, and medical superintendent Dr Paul Puthuran also spoke.
