With a teaching career spanning quarter century, Balusamy tugged at the heartstrings of his students

Coimbatore: “He is not just a teacher and a headmaster. He is Godsend,” chokes N. Lappani, a second-year college student. From food, books and sport jerseys and college admission and a totebag of morals, his “Balusamy Sir” has given him all. “It is really rare to find a teacher like him. But for him I would not have joined college,” says Thoufiq, another former student of the Selvapuram corporation higher secondary school.
Their humble “Balusamy Sir” will be honoured with the coveted Best Teacher's award from the President on the Teacher's Day and his students are jumping with joy. “It is like an award for us,” says Lappani. Indeed, N. Balusamy, who is presently headmaster of the corporation higher secondary school at Peelamedu belongs to a rare breed of “selfless teachers”, say his students. “He will spend his own money to encourage us in sports and arts,” says Thoufiq.
With a teaching career spanning quarter century in corporation schools in Coimbatore, Balusamy (56), a PG Biology teacher, has not just taught but tugged at the heartstrings of his students. From wayward to indisciplined and poor scorers, he chisels them all into responsible citizens. And his tool, he says, is “not a ruler, but love”.
“Corporation school students come from poor backgrounds but have enormous energy, active mind and sharp intelligence. It is our duty to chanellise their energies. So, I will spend my money and hold sports and other cultural events for them to exhibit their talent.”
For average scorers, he would hold special Sunday classes and provide lunch for them at his own cost. Even after his students leave school, he remains their mentor. “I would ensure that they join college and pursue higher education. I will talk to the college managements and get them a discount on college tuition fees,” he says.
