Tamil Nadu government to start centres for child guidance

Govt to to establish centres for suicide prevention, child guidance, geriatric care
Chennai: The government would soon take steps to establish centres for suicide prevention, child guidance, geriatric care, pediatric care and de-addiction, said health secretary Dr J Radhakrishnan. He was speaking at the inaugural of the sixth edition of the International Conference on Schizophrenia organised by the Schizophrenia Research Foundation, on Thursday.
He said that every person has a different temperement and they act differently at any point of time in their life. Some even go to the extent of harming themselves or committing suicide. They just need proper guidance and counseling when they undergo such problems.
About schizophrenia, he said, the need of the hour is the trained personnel in the field to take care of such mentally ill people. Even the caregivers need to be educated, he stressed.
The state government has also, in its schemes and CM’s insurance scheme, focused mainly on mental health, geriatric and pediatric issues besides non communicable diseases and recent developments in the field of medicine, Dr Radhakrishnan said.
Dr Radhakrishnan released the abstract of the conference during the function. Dr R Thara, Director of SCARF (Schizophrenia Research Foundation) also participated in the programme. Members of the World Psychiatric Association and World Association of Social Psychiatry and Indian Psychiatric Society also participated in the three-day conference.
